Going Postal

There was a time when being a High Street representative of Her Majesty's mail meant something special, which is probably why they built buildings like this. Unfortunately, now the prevailing mood is to close them. This one was in the Kings Road, Cjelsea.

Apropos of the changing nature of Post Offices, you might like this post in the English Buildings blog a few months ago -

The blog quotes a book by Julian Stray, which quotes architect (and later Duke of Wellington) Lord Gerald Wellesley in the Architectural Review, saying "A Post Office must be in a prominent position. It should look dignified and permanent ..."
