What a way to propose !?

I was walking behind Southbank yesterday (this is in Secker St, SE1) when I saw this - I don't really know what to think. On the one hand, it is original. I haven't heard of that many marriage proposals strapped to a lamp post. On the other.... well, make up your own mind. Here is an image you can read. There is a note at the bottom (after "Fox X x X") which says "To the local council, please leave up for five days". Why was it five days? Could there have been a different suitor each of those five days? It would have reduced the production costs at least. Might he have been unsure where the object of his affection was? And then, there's the text. Obviously heartfelt, but one might have though that with the professional production, he would have secured the services of a copywriter. For me, though, the thing that made me smile was that it is placed in a dead end street.

Ah well, so much for cynicism. I wish "Fox" well, and hope he gets the happiness he seeks.

The Gherkin!

This is the view of the Gherkin I get as I cycle into work. It is one of those strange buildings whose character changes accroding to the context it is viewed. Here, you see it in its most bold presentation, and can easily see why it has been nicknamed the Gherkin - more a surprise it wasn't called anything ruder. The actual name is the SwissRe building - boring, isn't it? Quite a lot of people were against is at the design stage, probably less are now they can see it. I've always been an enthusiastic supporter of bold modern architecture, and I can happily live with buildings like this cheek by jowl with the very oldest London has to offer.

By the way, I'm begining to work out how to publish pictures properly on the blog... it can only get better.

The start of the pictures

Ok, I know it's not tomrrow. I also know that next to nobody is reading this yet - so should I care? this is a pic I took a few years ago - actually it was long enough ago that I was still devloping my own prints. It's a shot of Covent Garden Arcade. The strange thing about it is that it looks like London, not Paris, Rome or Amsterdam. Is that because of the "Wool" sign? Let me know what you think.

Is this a good idea?

I've just seen the Paris Daily Photo site and liked it so much I thought I'd do my own. I couldn't believe that the London one wasn't being done, but I have the name, now. Am I going to do a photo a day? I don't know - I'm afraid I'm not that compulsive by nature. Also, although I'm heavily into photography, I don't yet have a very good digital. However, if I take to carrrying around my trusty old Fuji 401 I'll at least take some more photos. Here goes!

I've started with a shot of my street. I live in the Aldersbrook area which has recently been turned into a conservation area by our local council.
