Understated London

If you want to go celeb spotting in London, The Ivy restaurant in Covent Garden is one of the best places. Of course, if you aren't on the right list then you may have to wait six months for a table, but that's part of the cachet. It is entirely understated, though, and so typical of London.

Long while ago, but I don't suppose much has changed - adequate food, nothing spectacular.

Last year my husband obtained a copy of his grandparents' marriage certificate, dated 1903. They were poor, Polish Jews, and his grandfather's address was No1, West St, London W1.

A couple of days later it dawned on us - No 1 West St ? That's the Ivy, innit ? Amazing how 100 years can change the desirability of an address - can you imagine poor asylum seekers getting rooms above the Ivy today ?
