St Michael's Cornhill

Although squashed in by offices and shops from every side, The Church of St Michael's Cornhill bears closer examination. In its present guise one of Wren's churches, I never ceased to be amazed by the quality of carving in the stonework.

Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall Market may have the air of a contrived "happening" shopping area but with history dating back to the 1300's, standing there you are part of London through the ages. It feels good.

By Hammer and Hand All Arts Do Stand

The feature about All Hallows by the Tower that really surprised me was its museum in the undercroft. Small, but with some astonishing artefacts and historical documents that give you a fantastic sense of some of London's history. They also have the best preserved Roman mosaic floor.

I've passed this church by many times, mostly because of the proximity to the tourist hordes at the Tower of London, but I really enjoyed my visit - I recommend it to all.

All Hallows by the Tower

All Hallows by the Tower lays claim to being the oldest site of worship in the city, with history dating back to 675AD. It is quite a gem, slightly off the main drag and much neglected by the hordes of visitors to the next door Tower of London. More reasons to visit tomorrow.

Random Sculpture

This odd sculpture looks like it belongs outside Google's office, but there is no information on or around it. You can find it in Vine Place.

Minster Court

Looked at one way, this is possibly the most disney-esque building yet; quasi-spires poke over the roofline of local buildings. Looked at another way, it is a modern take on perpendicular architecture, with the original philosophy of turning thoughts heavenward removed.

A small haven

Just behind Fenchurch Street Station, there is a small peaceful haven, not essentially open to the public but nobody seems to throw you out. I'd recommend a visit. This is the very marine like fountain, harking back to Lloyds shipping background, see the full view over here here

Roll up, Roll up!

Bowls has a history in England going back hundreds of years, Francis Drake famously finished his game before sailing to the Spanish Armarda. This is in Finsbury Circus, in the heart of the City of London, very little is more sedate than rolling lumps of wood over a lawn.

Inner Sanctum

Here's a view many of you will not have seen, because it is inside the courtyard of King's College down Chancery Lane, The Maughan Library. Nothing to stop you walking in, it's just not in our nature to wander when it looks like private property.

The building is 19th Century Gothic, so not as old as it first appears. But do go and have a look if you get the chance, it is worth it.

I Gassed Myself

After several weeks absence, I rejoined "The Way We See It" for the foray to Rivington Street, in the heart of the East End, there were a couple of things that caught my eye I'll be showing here.

Today it was the disturbing image on this sticker on a sign that drew my attention. I wanted to know more about the ambiguity of the image. Was it the National Front? Something else? The link igassedmyself.com (warning: politically charged content, may offend) led me to the blog of Mike Marcus, an artist making a powerful statement - that the Israeli nation should know and do better than to put any people through anything like what the Germans did to them. I'm rather proud he's a Londoner.

Bevis Marks synagogue is hidden away in the City of London, where it has been for more than three hundred years. If you don't make it to Open House, you can visit, or maybe go for a service. Or, see pictures and history on the web.
