September Theme Day - Big

The theme this month is "Big", and I confess I didn't want to just do a picture of something big. Also,much as though I've always thought of London as a big city, having spent time recently in China, with cities of 20 million people, London doesn't seem that big any more.

So, what is it that is so big about London? I thought long and hard, and then it came to me: London's influence over the rest of the United Kingdom. Look at the road map, London sits like a great spider, with its web reaching evrey corner of the country. Just about every town has a "London Road" - here we are in Alton (where I spent the weekend), still it has a London Road. Even Edinburgh and Glasgow have a "London Road".

July Theme Day - Empty

It's a theme day for the worldwide City Daily Photoblogs again, and "Empty" and London are not natural bedfellows, so here is a picture of the inner courtyard of the Victoria & Albert Museum at night, which feels pretty empty.

June Theme Day - Feet

I had a different photo in mind for the theme day, but then I heard on Sunday that a Blue Plaque had been unveiled to Douglas Bader, commemorating where he lived in London for the last 27 years of his life. And, even though I've had to borrow the photo, I had to run the story.

Douglas Bader's life is the stuff that might be dreamed up for "Boy's Own" or the like. If you haven't heard the story or seen "Reach for the Sky" (the film based on his life) I urge you to read it here or here. It was he who lost both feet (and lower legs) in a plane crash, went on to fly and fight in WWII, escape repeatedly from prison camp (until they took his artificial legs away) and spent his life after the war campaigning for and helping the disabled.

May Theme Day - Shadows

So the City Daily Photo theme day is shadows, and you think I've finally lost it.

Except this is Fortress Wapping - the London HQ of News International. Back in the Eighties, it was they who, following in Eddy Shah's footsteps, transformed newspaper production and led the exodus from Fleet Street. I well remember the scenes of union Vs police confrontation that played out each day. This company arguably changed the face of modern London more than any other, so are worthy of mention here whatever my opinion of them. And shadows? Well, they do own The Sun newspaper (clue bottom left), and everyone knows where there's sun there are shadows.

April Theme Day - Yellow

I was a bit hard pressed to think of a London twist to the Worldwide City Daily Photo theme day "Yellow". I thought of Speakers Corner (Yell-O) , but then remembered these St John's Ambulance bikes. As I never tire of telling people, bike is by far the fastest way to get around London - somthing you would be very pleased about if you needed these guys in an emergency!

January Theme Day - Best of 2008

So 2008 has been and gone. Seen quite a lot of changes here at LDP Towers, including going back to time-consuming film photography and finding I have less time overall for this photography lark. Small inherent contradiction there, but still.

The first of the month (and the year) marks a City Daily Photo theme day - in this case the best photo of 2008. It's never easy choosing your own photos, but I found myself gravitating to my film shots, and the Bronica ones in front of the rest. This shot of Canary Wharf (first seen in April) just edged it for me.

December Theme Day - Circles and Spheres

December's theme day is Circles or Spheres, and I was pleased when I thought of the round bowler hat, which has become a true London icon (even though you will see extremely few around these days).

It has a fascinating history - it was originally designed in the mid 19th century (by a firm called Bowler) to protect a gamekeeper's head from branches while riding on horseback. Outside of London, it was something that servants like butlers would wear. Yet somehow in London it became associated with professionals and City gents - bankers, stockbrokers, civil service. It remained so through to the 60s (I remember my dad wearing one) but then fell into disuse. This guy is a doorman, so it is an appropriate use.

The subject for this month's theme day is "Books" and for London, the British Library is a clear choice. This photo of the sun and shadows making a fine sculture perfect is one of my all time favourites.

October Theme Day - Lions

October's City Daily Photo theme is "Lines" and here are some of London's finest lions. I considered using the tourist's favourite, the Trafalgar Square Lions - put there to guard Nelson's column, and a damn fine job they've made of that - but decided to go with the ones making sure no one makes off with Buckingham Palace.

The statue is "Victoria Memorial" a carving by Thomas Brock, one of Victoria's favourite sculptors. It's one of those where everything means something - the lady with the sickle represents "Labour" or some such.

September Theme Day - Sister Cities

Today's worldwide City Daily Photo theme is "Sister Cities", and London's sister city is New York, so what else could I show? Ultimately, this is the sight that so many have dreamed about over the years that there could only be this choice. I took the photo when I was there in 2002.

August Theme Day - Metal

The August City Daily Photo theme day is Metal.

Most areas of London and every cemetery have a monument to their local war dead. Like this one here, recording the names of those who died in the two World Wars. July Theme Day - A "No ...." Sign

Can you read this sign? I'm not surprised, we've lost the hang of understanding this type of . What it says is "No Gluttony". It is the Golden Boy of Pye Corner, set up to mark the point where the Great Fire of London stopped in 1666. They believed that the cause of the fire was the sin of gluttony, so this statue was made "prodigious fat" as a warning to us all. Says a lot about the changing trends of obesity, that he was considered fat, doesn't it?
